Tattler Summer 2015 51 Racqueteers Club Adrian Symons The singles competition for the Regis Cup is approaching its zenith, and with Gary Tupicoff’s win over Eddie Burke deciding one finalist, it remains only for the match between reigning (and perennial) champion Rick Rylands and emerging talent Don Griffin to be finalised before we flag Gary’s opponent. Don has sought a postponement of this all-important clash, citing some general stiffness and weariness, as if having just completed his 52nd marathon the previous weekend was some justification for his plight. The clash of the Titans shall have to wait. Meanwhile, our traditional meeting with the Queensland Club was postponed from its usual August date as being too close to the Inter-Club Tournament involving the Racqueteers, the Queensland Club, the Brisbane Club and the Downs Club, which took place in July. These matches are enthusiastically embraced by the Racqueteers and are usually over-subscribed, to the extent that we often make players available to be borrowed for the day by the Queensland Club, who often have difficulty in fielding a full complement. Unfortunately, its rescheduled date in October clashed with the cruising season, during which the Racqueteers are wont to disport themselves in foreign climes, leaving our playing ranks sorely depleted. The irony is that on this occasion the Queensland Club had an embarrassment of riches, so we were forced to beg off with our collective tails tucked firmly between our legs. While a shoulder ailment has curtailed the tennis activities of John Rogers, he has directed his energies and organisational abilities, in concert with Darby Munro, who happily continues to play, into convening outings to mysterious destinations for the Racqueteers and their companions in life, building on the legacy of the famous Friday Long Lunch instigated by Brad Grinstead and his wife Bev, who have now handed in their tour guide tickets. The latest iteration of this tradition recently saw the group head down to Beaudesert for morning tea and a visit to the Scenic Rim Robotic Dairy to be enlightened in the process, which allows the farmer to sleep in while the cows present themselves for milking as and when they desire. The following lunch at Kooralbyn before a leisurely return home at the end of the day were the culmination of an event which was roundly applauded by all who attended. Quizzing Darby on what actually was so good about the day and on any specific highlights was a fascinating, but ultimately unrewarding exercise. The passing of Bill Siganto AM was a sad occasion for the Racqueteers as Bill was an enthusiastic member in the 80s and was fondly remembered as a good and decent man and an always amiable companion whose loss we mourn. We offer our sincere sympathies and condolences to his wife and family. 1 3 2 4
