Health and Wellness Centre News Michael Durham It is summer! Time to take the training outdoors and enjoy the weather. As the months get warmer, the threat of our Christmas derailment looms. We all tend to let ourselves lose track over the festive season and put on a few extra kilos over the break. We all use different reasons, not enough time, just cannot get into the gym, I have been away. Well here are some tips to help you get through the Christmas period with a little less damage to the waist line: • Snacking during those family visits - It is always a good idea to eat before you go on those family visits or out for Christmas drinks. If we eat before we arrive, we are less likely to snack on less nutritious food. • Work drinks - Try to drink less over the Christmas period. At all those Christmas parties, each alcoholic drink you have, is adding more calories to your diet. 38 Tattler Summer 2015 Did you know: Wine, beer, cider, spirits and all our favorite drinks are made from natural starch and sugar. The fermentation and distillation process of making certain drinks is used to produce the alcohol content and this is why alcohol contains lots of calories – seven calories a gram in fact, almost as much as a gram of fat. • Be active - Try to keep as active as possible. If away on holidays, get out and walk. If at home, get out of the house and go for a walk around your area or to the local park. • Stay hydrated - Drinking water helps satiate your appetite, while also keeping us hydrated. This might just stop the waiting hangover. • Drink in moderation - As mentioned before, soft drink, juices and alcohol, all contain calories. • Enjoy yourself - There is no need to abstain from all your favourite things, just be selective in choices and eat and drink within moderation. During the festive season, it can be hard to stay focused and keep on track.
