Tattler Summer 2015

Tattler Summer 2015 1 OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF TATTERSALL’S CLUB BRISBANE From the President The year in which our Club commemorated 150 years of racing, history and friendship is giving way to the celebration of Christmas as we gather together with friends, and reflect on our achievements of the past 12 months. The efforts of our Heritage Sub Club have given us all a better understanding of the history of our great Club. Each of us has stood in the Members' Bar and admired our predecessors for the magnificent space created for our enjoyment. We have also reflected on their foresight in creating a shopping arcade from the outset in the development. One outcome of the 1920s Heritage studies has been to gain a better understanding of the Committees in the 1920s, and the assistance of our longest serving Club Member John Danaher has been invaluable. Next year we can acknowledge former President Pat Ransom and his colleagues, as it will be 90 years since they officially opened our Members’ Bar. I would like to congratulate the Presidents and organising Committees of our Sub Clubs, not just for the wide range of activities provided for Members' enjoyment throughout the year, but also for their commitment to supporting Club events such as our Sportsman's Grill Nights and the Queensland Pops Orchestra evening. Each Sub Club activity involves considerable planning and organisational effort, and the valuable volunteer work done by these Committees is truly amazing, and a great example of promoting our motto "friendship is life". Gentlemen, thanks to each one of you for your great work throughout 2015. Our most recent addition to our long list of Sub Clubs is Equestrian and Polo, and it is most appropriate that this is being established as a Sub Club to the Tattersall's Racing Club. We can look forward to supporting our Tattersall's team as they will be playing at Doomben Racecourse, adding another feature to our busy social program. Our racing program remains in full swing. The Melbourne Cup was celebrated in great style, and on the evening before with the Melbourne Cup Calcutta. This year we revived an old tradition of the President's Table, an opportunity for Members who had not previously experienced the fun and excitement of the Club's Calcutta. On Melbourne Cup day itself, our Club again hosted a fully booked out event. Later in the month, we have our very own Tattersall’s Celebration Season Race Day at Doomben Racecourse, on Saturday 21 November. This year our Club staff have performed admirably in surpassing the targets set by the Committee, particularly in our functions area, but with overall increased patronage and enthusiasm throughout the Club. Our Chief Executive, Dale St George, commenced with Tattersall's Club just over 12 months ago, and his extensive Cover: Melbourne Cup Winner Michelle Payne on Prince of Penzance experience in the hospitality industry has brought leadership and innovation to all facets of the Club. On behalf of all Members, I express our thanks to Dale for his time with the Club and note the ongoing efforts of our wonderful staff who make each Member’s visit to our Club so special. The review of our Club's Rules, first announced at the 2014 AGM, has progressed through a very positive engagement with Club Members. The amendments proposed unanimously by your Committee have followed from an extensive review and there has been supportive and very useful feedback from Members. The new rules will provide more certainty and improved governance across the Club. I am personally very thankful for the Committee's efforts, along with the involvement of interested Members, who have assisted in providing valuable feedback and suggestions. I encourage all Members to cast their vote positively. As Christmas and our end of year holiday period nears, each year our Club becomes even busier, as friends catch up and share the camaraderie of drinks and a meal together. On behalf of my fellow Committee Members, I wish you and your family all the best for the holiday season and the new year ahead. Amicitia Vita Est Des Whybird President
