Top Men of Tattersall’s Thomas Ramsay Hall T homas Ramsay Hall was considered Tattersall’s Club’s official architect and long regarded as one of Brisbane’s principal architects of the era. Queensland is dotted with examples of his monumental skill in buildings such as the Mater and various hospitals, churches, shire halls, Ascot Chambers and the magnificent Brisbane City Hall and Tattersall’s Club. Hall played a major part in moulding Brisbane’s building character. He was born on 2 January 1879 in Brisbane. From 1891 he attended Brisbane Grammar School where he won the Francis Memorial Prize for mathematics. He continued his studies in accounting and architecture and became an approved valuer. In 1907 he was appointed Town Clerk of Sandgate. Thomas began practicing architecture in 1913 at Hall and Prentice and Hall and Phillips from 1930. Hall’s interests expanded into horse racing and he was heavily involved in the industry through Tattersall’s Club and Queensland Turf Clubs. His name was commemorated in the T. R. Hall Handicap. He succeeded to Presidency in 1928 following the sudden death of R.P. Ranson and remained at the helm until 1932.
