Tattler Summer 2015 11 Sydney based artist Noel McKenna has won the 26th annual Tattersall’s Club Landscape Art Prize with his entry ‘Farm Scene’. He receives $30,000 prize money for his winning entry. The winning painting is an oil on canvas and is a response to the landscape seen as one drives through the countryside. Noel has previously won the NSW Parliament Plein Art Painting Prize in 2011, the Wynne Watercolour Prize in 2005, 2002, 2001, 1999 and 1997, the Mosman Art Prize in 2003 and the Sulman Art Prize in 1994. This year he has been named a finalist for the Sulman Art Prize and Salon des Refuses. The Tattersall’s Club Landscape Art Prize is an acquisitive award and the winning entry becomes part of the Club’s art collection. A record number of 90 Australian artists entered this year’s Tattersall’s Club Landscape Art Prize. The judging panel included: Jason Smith, Curatorial Manager of Australian Art at QAGOMA, Nick Mitzevick, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Associate Professor Lindsay Farrell, Faculty of Education and Art at Australian Catholic University and Michael Paramor, Tattersall’s Club Committeeman. Luke Sciberas received a Highly Commended by the judging panel for his painting ‘Midday Mine’, along with Michael Zavros for ‘Replica Pantheon in Blue’. Luke Wagner was awarded a Commended for his piece ‘A moment from my window – Early Morning, Upper Derwent.’ Tattersall’s Club Members voted for Naomi White’s ‘A dusting of frost’ to receive the Members’ Choice Award. In 2016 and 2017 Tattersall’s Club will tour key pieces from its prestigious art collection to a number of regional galleries including: the Redland Art Gallery, Gympie Regional Gallery, Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum, Childers Art Space and Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery. A selection of 15 pieces have been chosen from the collection for the tour. Their connection to Queensland is the basis for their selection, with many depicting Queensland landscapes in a range of painting styles. The artists are of mid and senior level and include: Gordon Shepherdson, Jeffrey Makin, Elisabeth Cummings, Marcel Desbiens, John Caldwell, Sybil Curtis, Helene Grove, Craig Waddell, Michael Nelson Jagamarra, Maureen Tattersall’s Club held a week long itinerary of celebratory events to honour the prestigious competition, including the Senior Members’ Vote Morning Tea on Monday 31 August, the Art Prize High Tea and Curator’s Tour on Tuesday 1 September, the Art Prize Cocktail and Awards Party on Wednesday 2 September and the Ladies Charity Luncheon and Jazz in the Art on Friday 4 September. Following the celebrations, the exhibition moved to the foyer at Hansen, Lisa Adams, Euan MacLeod, Joe Furlonger, Davida Allen and Jun Chen. The tour will continue to strengthen the Club’s relationships with its Country Members, build regional partnerships and networks, and foster a cultural tourism with Tattersall’s Club Members travelling to the regional locations to view the exhibits. It also provides the arts industry with the unique opportunity to view the Tattersall’s Collection, which has never been shown publicly before. Dates are as follow: • Redland Art Gallery – Sunday 6 March until Sunday 17 April 2016 Waterfront Place for a public exhibition from Monday 7 September to Friday 18 September. The 26th Tattersall’s Club Landscape Art Prize concluded with the announcement of the People’s Choice Awards. The votes were counted at 3.00pm on Thursday 17 September and revealed Ji Chen to be the winner with his entry ‘Great Sandy Desert’. A secondary exhibition; the Queensland Exhibition, was also on display and depicts the state of Queensland through various artworks.
