In what was supposed to be a casual return for the burgeoning lock, O’Donoghue went on to play all but two of the Reds’ games in 2013, including the clash against the British & Irish Lions. After making his debut for the Reds in 2007 and playing two seasons under former coach Eddie Jones, O’Donoghue travelled to Europe to take advantage of his British passport, playing for Ulster (2008-10), Leinster (2010-11) and London Wasps (2011-12). He also represented Agen (2003-04), Northampton (2004-05) and Worcester (2005-07) prior to joining the Reds. His initial reason for returning home was to establish his business, FroPro Protein Ice Cream, but O’Donoghue’s undeniable passion for rugby saw him resume training with his old side and before long, was called upon to fill the boots of Reds’ skipper James Horwill. He played just two games last year, including a bench role against the British & Irish Lions, and will be looking to add to his 18 Super Rugby caps in 2014. Owen debuted for the Brumbies in 2011 and earned eight caps in his inaugural Super Rugby season. Before that, he made 13 provincial appearances for Counties- Manukau in New Zealand in a team that boasted All Blacks great Tana Umaga as a player and coach. In his debut game for Counties, Lance got the opportunity to scrummage against All Black Kees Meeuws, who was playing for Otago. He also represented Counties-Manukau in two Ranfurly Shield matches in 2010 – against Southland and Canterbury – while he played for Sydney University in Australia between 2007 and 2009 and for Randwick in 2010.
