Having played rugby since the age of seven, Thomson spent a year abroad after high school before returning to play in the now-defunct ARC competition. Thomson then signed his first Super Rugby contract with the Waratahs, earning nine caps during the 2009-10 seasons. At an imposing 205cm, Thomson is regarded as an outstanding lineout technician and is also a prominent ball carrier. His opportunities in were limited to playing for the Rebel Rising in 2013 where his experience and ability made him a standout, which has him in contention to build on his Super Rugby experience in 2014. The powerful No. 8 made five appearances for the Waratahs in 2013 following 14 caps in his breakout debut year in 2012 and joins a young and exciting back row unit that many believe will be a mainstay of the Rebels for years to come. Timani grew up in Tonga but holds aspirations of joining his brother as an Australian representative. Originally moving to Australia to play rugby league, Timani played two seasons of Toyota Cup with the Canterbury Bulldogs. However his rugby background and sheer physicality around the park saw him convinced to move to the Waratahs, keen to follow in the footsteps of Sitaleki and older brother Sione who has played international rugby for Tonga.
