Hegarty joined the club’s Extended Playing Squad from the Brisbane Broncos U20 side, having been forced to choose between rugby league and rugby union whilst playing in high school. During his time at the Broncos, Hegarty was mentored by former international Steve Renouf. Hegarty scored two tries in the club’s final round 38-37 victory over the Highlanders, including the match winner, to send off departing and retiring Rebels as winners in front of a raucous AAMI Park crowd. Hegarty’s ability to break the line and find space is exciting for fans and teammates alike. His move to the club has not impacted his tertiary education, with the Queenslander continuing his Queensland University of Technology Law degree. SCOTT HIGGINBOTHAM Position: No. 8 Physical: 195cm/107kg Date of Birth: 5 September 1986 Place of Birth: Perth, AUS Super Rugby Caps: 78 Super Rugby Points: 115 Super Rugby Debut: Round 5, 2008 vs Bulls, Brisbane Test Caps: 23 Test Points: 10 Test Debut 27 November 2010 vs France, Paris With the signing of Scott Higginbotham for the 2013 season, the Rebels acquired one of the best forwards in world rugby. They also secured the signing of an inspirational leader, his standing amongst the club reflected in his appointment as captain for the 2014 season. Higginbotham was awarded the 2013 Rebels Players’ Player and extended his contract with the club until the end of the 2015 Super Rugby season. Equally comfortable playing at blindside flanker or No.8, Higginbotham scored six tries for the Rebels in the 2013 season before his year was prematurely ended by a shoulder injury that saw him miss the British & Irish Lions series and Australia’s Spring Tour. The 2012 Australian Super Rugby Player of the Year runner-up is the ultimate back row forward. His robust nature in contact causes havoc among opponents.
