SUPER RUGBY MEDIA GUIDE 2014 REBELS 61 MATT COCKBAIN Position: Assistant Coach Born: 19 September 1972, Coffs Harbour AUS Coaching History: Reds Lineout Coach (2007) Rebel Rising Joint Head Coach (2011) Rebels Assistant Coach (2012-) Matt Cockbain enjoyed a successful rugby career which included 91 matches for the Reds and 63 Tests for the Wallabies. During his international career he participated in two World Cups, including the successful 1999 campaign under Rod Macqueen AM. After retirement, Cockbain transitioned into coaching and was appointed as the Reds’ lineout coach in 2007 before moving to Melbourne. Since then, he has taken up various roles with Melbourne University Rugby Club and the Victorian State team, before working with Rebel Rising in 2011 and being appointed by the club for the 2012 season. With a primary focus on forward play, Matt’s first two years of professional coaching the Rebels have shown steady improvements across both set piece and general play. His experience has been particularly invaluable at lineout time, with the club winning 85% of attacking ball between 2012 and 2013. EDDIE AHOLELEI Position: Prop Physical: 190cm/120kg Date of Birth: 3 December 1981 Place of Birth: Auckland, NZL Super Rugby Caps: 1 Super Rugby Points: 0 Super Rugby Debut: Round 8, 2012 vs Brumbies, Canberra Test Caps: 4 Test Points: 5 Test Debut 25 May 2013 vs Japan, Kanagawa Eddie’s Aholelei’s experience proves that good things come to those who wait. At 30 years of age, he was promoted from the Extended Playing Squad into the full-time unit for 2013 and retained for the 2014 season. Aholelei joined the club after an impressive 2011 season with Manly Marlins in the Shute Shield Competition, and for the Rebel Rising side. A physical and tenacious prop, Aholelei always turns in consistent and professional performances. The Tongan international is able to play both sides of the scrum and is regarded as having one of the best attitudes and work ethics at the club. He is also a fantastic role model for young players in the local community.
