2014 SUPER RUGBY MEDIA GUIDE REBELS 60 TONY MCGAHAN @Tony_McGahan Position: Head Coach Born: 19 July 1972, Warwick AUS Coaching History: IBM Coaching Coordinator (2005) Munster Defence & Backs Coach (2005-08) Munster Director of Rugby (2008-12) Australia Defence Coach (2012-13) Rebels Head Coach (2014-) Tony McGahan comes to Melbourne highly regarded as an international coach with a record of success at the top level. After leaving Australia in 2005, McGahan had success in Japan and then spent seven years at Irish Club Munster as Defence Coach and later, Director of Rugby. McGahan was part of two Heineken Cup titles and two Celtic League titles (RaboDirect Pro 12), and also coached Munster to its historic 15-6 win over the touring Wallabies at Thomond Park in 2010. In 2012, McGahan returned home and was appointed to the role of Wallabies Coaching Coordinator. In July 2013, he was announced as the Rebels Head Coach for the 2014 and 2015 seasons and began work straight away as the club searches for its maiden Super Rugby Finals appearance. SEAN HEDGER Position: Assistant Coach Born: 13 November 1973, Darwin AUS Coaching History: Reds Academy Program Coordinator (2003-05) Kobe Steelers Assistant Coach (2005-09) Kyuden Voltex Head Coach (2010-11) ARU Academy (2012-13) Rebels Assistant Coach (2014-) Sean Hedger joins the Rebels as an experienced international coach, with a strong background in both professional and community rugby; most recently as National Academy Coach at the Australian Rugby Union. Hedger began his professional rugby career as Rugby Coordinator of the Reds Rugby College before assuming the role of Rugby Program Head Coach from 2003 until 2005. In mid 2005, he re-located to Japan, fulfilling multiple coaching roles with Top League team, Kobelco Steelers, over five seasons. In 2010, Hedger was named Assistant Coach of Kyuden Voltex, before accepting the role of Head Coach in 2011. He then returned home to Sydney where he was appointed as National Academy Head Coach (NSW) at the Australian Rugby Union. Hedger’s unique background encompasses development, managerial expertise and both assistant and senior coaching. The Rebels are excited to being able to utilise his coaching expertise, but also to add value in other parts of the rugby program.
