SUPER RUGBY MEDIA GUIDE 2014 FORCE 51 BEN MCCALMAN @BenMcCalman Position: Loose Forward Physical: 192cm/106kg Date of Birth: 18 March 1988 Place of Birth: Dubbo, AUS Super Rugby Caps: 51 Super Rugby Points: 20 Super Rugby Debut: Round 1, 2010 vs Brumbies, Perth Test Caps: 29 Test Points: 10 Test Debut 24 July 2010 vs South Africa, Brisbane Ben McCalman is a core member of the Force’s forward pack and with his ability to play across the back-five, has cemented himself as a key member of the squad. Last season he joined an elite group of Force players, notching his 50th cap in the side’s victory over the Highlanders in Round 15. After an injury-plagued 2012, the Wallaby loose forward made 14 appearances for the Force and his man-of-the-match performances in victories over the Highlanders and the Brumbies in the final round showed why he is one of his club – and country’s – most valuable assets. HUGH MCMENIMAN Position: Lock Physical: 200cm/114kg Date of Birth: 1 November 1983 Place of Birth: Brisbane, AUS Super Rugby Caps: 37 Super Rugby Points: 5 Super Rugby Debut: Round 1, 2005 vs Hurricanes, Brisbane Test Caps: 22 Test Points: 0 Test Debut 11 June 2005 vs Samoa, Sydney Hugh McMeniman returned for his first Super Rugby season since 2009 with his on-field impact having the Force’s ‘Sea of Blue’ wishing he’d returned earlier. He finished fourth in the club’s Nathan Sharpe Medal count despite playing just half the season after missing the opening match (pectoral strain) and sustaining a shoulder injury in Round 8 that ruled him out for a further seven games. McMeniman’s hard running and power in contact made him a formidable opponent and a highly respected member of the team in 2013 which also saw him return to Test rugby for the Wallabies against New Zealand. He started his professional rugby career at the Reds (2005-09) and spent three seasons at the Kubota Spears in the Japanese Top League (2010-11). He ranked sixth for the club in turnovers won last year (6) despite missing half of the season, illustrating what a valuable weapon he can be for the Force in 2014.
