The lock has a great deal of experience in local rugby circles, having played for five different Unions at senior level. Mathee has come full circle, after starting his career at the Golden Lions and now returning to the Johannesburg outfit. He has previously represented the Leopards (2008-09), Free State Cheetahs (2010), Griffons (2010) and Pumas (2011-13). DERICK MINNIE Position: Flanker Physical: 186cm/111kg Date of Birth: 29 October 1986 Place of Birth: Alberton, RSA Super Rugby Caps: 47 Super Rugby Points: 25 Super Rugby Debut: Round 1, 2010 vs Stormers, Johannesburg Test Caps: 0 Test Points: 0 Test Debut – Derick Minnie returns to the Lions for the 2014 Super Rugby competition, having played three games while on loan at the Sharks last season. Minnie brings vast experience to the squad and looks set to reach the 50-cap milestone in 2014. Should he earn selection from the outset, Minnie will achieve the half century against the Bulls in Pretoria during Round 3. Having captained the Golden Lions in the 2013 Currie Cup tournament, the loose forward fine-tuned his leadership skills and will continue to lead from the front as vice-captain in Super Rugby. His strong ball-carrying skills, physicality and feisty breaks make him one of the players to watch. Minnie was named the 2013 Golden Lions Rugby Union’s Forward Player of the Year.
