He previously played youth rugby with Western Province at U18 Craven Week level and then joined the Sharks Academy during the 2012 Absa U19 competition. The young prop then went on to represent the South African U20 team at the Junior World Championships on home soil, playing in four of the team’s five matches, including the triumphant Final against New Zealand in which they prevailed 21-16. TORSTEN VAN JAARSVELD Position: Hooker Physical: 176cm/106kg Date of Birth: 30 June 1987 Place of Birth: Windhoek, NAM Super Rugby Caps: 0 Super Rugby Points: 0 Super Rugby Debut: – Test Caps: 0 Test Points: 0 Test Debut – Torsten van Jaarsveld represented the Blue Bulls U18 Academy team in 2005 and was then contracted by the Valke where he played at U19 and U21 levels. The hooker then signed for the Pumas where he quickly became a stalwart. He was selected for the 2012 Northern Barbarians side for the June internationals against the touring England squad and has been contracted by the Cheetahs from the end of 2012. He comes with a reputation as being a tough and hardworking hooker who will likely earn his first Super Rugby cap at some time this season and may also be utilised as a flanker in an emergency.
