Initially he played mainly in Vodacom and Currie Cup competitions and even had a loan spell at the Griffons in 2012. Uys made sporadic appearances for the senior Cheetahs team in Super Rugby after his debut in 2009 before finally nailing down a regular starting berth during the 2013 season. He was a member of the South African side that competed in the 2005 U19 World Championship and has 33 Super Rugby caps to his name, including 14 earned last season. PHILIP VAN DER WALT Position: Loose Forward Physical: 194cm/110kg Date of Birth: 14 July 1989 Place of Birth: Adelaide, RSA Super Rugby Caps: 41 Super Rugby Points: 15 Super Rugby Debut: Round 10, 2010 vs Crusaders, Christchurch Test Caps: 0 Test Points: 0 Test Debut – Phillip van der Walt has evolved into a very versatile loose forward ans is an asset for both the Super Rugby and Currie Cup teams. He played all 17 Super Rugby matches last season and it was only a shoulder injury that prevented him from playing the full Currie Cup campaign. The Eastern Cape-born loose forward began his senior representative career as a flanker but is now considered a specialist No. 8. Last year, Van Der Walt excelled demonstrated his fiery brand of play, using his pace and brute force to good effect when carrying the ball. His height also adds value as a lineout option for his team and the former Springbok Sevens player is already displaying strong leadership traits.
