2014 SUPER RUGBY MEDIA GUIDE BULLS 236 JACQUES ENGELBRECHT @Vleis8 Position: Loose Forward Physical: 194cm/112kg Date of Birth: 6 October 1985 Place of Birth: Cape Town, RSA Super Rugby Caps: 14 Super Rugby Points: 5 Super Rugby Debut: Round 9, 2013 vs Rebels, Melbourne Test Caps: 0 Test Points: 0 Test Debut – Jacques Engelbrecht’s arrival in Pretoria after a strong Super Rugby season with the Kings was welcomed by all. Not only did the powerful athlete fit the profile of a Pretoria loose forward, but he also performed admirably to demonstrate his credentials at Currie Cup level. Engelbrecht’s true worth seems to lie in his ability as an impact player and with the franchise well-stocked in the loose forward department, one can expect the former Springbok Sevens player to excel as a ball-carrier off the bench. Engelbrecht loves the physical stuff and will be a prominent fixture in defence as well. He made 15 appearances for the Kings last season, scoring one try and carrying the ball more times (118) than any other player at the franchise (Cornell du Preez 102 and Schalk Ferreira 85). JJ ENGELBRECHT Position: Wing Physical: 190cm/95kg Date of Birth: 22 February 1989 Place of Birth: Port Elizabeth, RSA Super Rugby Caps: 33 Super Rugby Points: 35 Super Rugby Debut: Round 1, 2012 vs Sharks, Pretoria Test Caps: 12 Test Points: 20 Test Debut 18 August 2012 vs Argentina, Cape Town A Springbok call-up in 2012 indicated the impact that JJ Engelbrecht made in his first season of Super Rugby. Seven consecutive Test starts and four tries in 2013 indicated an even stronger showing in his follow-up year. The elusive Engelbrecht runs great lines on attack, is always a threat with ball in hand and managed to add consistency to his game as well – especially in defence, making 113 tackles last season. He will be a senior team member this year and if his progress in the first two season at Super Rugby level is anything to go by, the Eastern Cape-born player can be one of the real stars of 2014.
