That year also marked Taylor’s first season for the Canterbury provincial team, where he really showed his worth and gained further experience packing down between the likes of All Black props Ben Franks and Wyatt Crockett. Injuries held him back in 2013, but he is one of the fittest athletes in the squad and has the skills to play at inside centre or wing, despite specialising at hooker. Taylor was part of the New Zealand U20 team that won the 2011 Junior World Championship in Italy, beating England 33-22 in the Final. TOM TAYLOR Position: Flyhalf Physical: 183cm/90kg Date of Birth: 11 March 1989 Place of Birth: Christchurch, NZL Super Rugby Caps: 25 Super Rugby Points: 201 Super Rugby Debut: Round 3, 2012 vs Chiefs, Napier Test Caps: 3 Test Points: 14 Test Debut 24 August 2013 vs Australia, Wellington Tom Taylor joined the Crusaders in 2012 after being involved with the Wider Training Group the year prior. He had an outstanding debut season taking goalkicking duties while Dan Carter recovered and established himself an incredibly accurate boot, converting 14 penalties and missing just one. Taylor’s impressive form earned him a call up to the All Blacks, making his debut against Australia in mid-2013 and retaining his spot for the end of year tour. He was also involved in the 2009 New Zealand U20 Junior World Championship-winning side. Taylor is the son of All Black Warwick Taylor who played for the national side from 1983-1988. Warwick also played for Canterbury from 1982-1990 and Tom’s uncle, Murray Taylor, was also an All Black. He is one of two active Super Rugby players to make his debut in Napier – the other being Crusaders teammate Luke Whitelock who debuted in the same match.
