In 2011, Slade transferred to the Highlanders to gain more playing time at his preferred position of flyhalf, making 20 appearances and scoring 182 points despite suffering a broken jaw on two occasions and a leg fracture. Slade has played for Canterbury since 2008 and has also had an impressive international career, representing the New Zealand U19 and U21 sides, the Junior All Blacks, and then the All Blacks in 2010, 2011 and 2013. He has scored nearly 600 points in first class rugby over his career. The experience and talent that Slade adds to the Crusaders is immense. He is a crucial member of the team – especially while Dan Carter is on extended leave – but he has the added advantage of being able to play virtually anywhere in the backline. He is an aggressive defender and dangerous attacker. Taufua’s professional debut occurred durng the 2012 ITM Cup where he had an outstanding season for Tasman and proceeded to make a significant impact when joining the Canterbury squad for the Semi Final and Final. Taufua was also part of the New Zealand U20 team which competed in the 2012 Junior World Championship in South Africa as the New Zealanders fell 22-16 to the hosts in the Final.
