He clearly benefitted from more regular game time during the 2013 season and from having the experience and expertise of former All Blacks hooker Corey Flynn to draw upon. Funnell was a former captain of Palmerston North Boys High School rugby team and was a member of the 2008 New Zealand Schools squad. He also captained the Crusader Knights development team in 2012. He is a cousin of the Whitelock brothers, George, Adam, Sam and Luke who join him in the Crusaders squad. Like fellow Crusaders back Israel Dagg, Guildford hails from the Hawke’s Bay and has played most of his provincial rugby there. His Super Rugby debut was for the Hurricanes in 2008 before moving to the Crusaders in 2010. Guildford has had an extensive representative career, being involved in the New Zealand Secondary schools, U19 and U20 squads, as well as winning a pair of Junior World Championships in 2008 and 2009. Guildford was first selected for the All Blacks in 2009 and was the youngest player in the squad. He was a member of the Maori All Blacks squad in 2013 and represented New Zealand in Sevens, competing in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and winning the gold medal against Australia.
