A strong scrummager and inspirational leader, Schwalger is highly experienced in pressure situations. The double Super Rugby champion is a former Samoa captain who has played in three Rugby World Cups and led his Samoan side to their historic victory over Australia in 2011. Schwalger missed last year’s ITM Cup recovering from a knee injury but was involved in a coaching capacity with his Counties Manukau side, with whom he won the ITM Cup Championship in 2012. Schwalger has played for the Highlanders (2005, 2011), Hurricanes (2007), Llanelli Scarlets (2007-09) and Sale Sharks (2009-10), as well as Taranaki in the ITM Cup. The tall, athletic loose forward was selected on the back of outstanding ITM Cup form for Tasman. He was named Defender of the Year by his coaches and represented the Maori All Blacks on their North American Tour of Canada and the United States. Squire is a strong lineout exponent with physicality and power being prominent features of his game. He offers the Chiefs another lineout option and will be an exciting player to watch this season as he strives for a Super Rugby debut.
