A strong, agile player, Saili has established himself as a regular feature in the match-day 22, playing 1072 minutes throughout 15 Super Rugby matches in the last campaign. The 2014 season shapes as a crucial year for Saili in terms of how he responds to the pressure from Jerome Kaino’s arrival to challenge him for the No. 8 jersey. His defensive skills are robust, making 134 tackles and missing just nine (93.70 per cent), ranking him second at the Blues for players with 100 or more tackles last season. He displays all of the athleticism and courage needed to make it at this level of rugby and has a huge work rate. He led the Blues in tackles last season (154), missing just 10 for an elite completion percentage of 93.90. At such a young age, Ta’avao is still in his infancy as far as props go and is working hard on nailing his core roles. He was captain of the New Zealand U20 team in 2010 and part of the Blues’ Wider Training Group in 2011.
