Premier Rugby Weekly Program Grand-Final

Premier Rugby Grand-final Welcome to the grand final edition of Queensland Premier Rugby Weekly. This weekend Ballymore Stadium hosts two full days of club Rugby action, culminating in the Premier Grade grand-final between University of Queensland and Sunnybank. With University having already claimed the Doughty Shield and the Welsby and Horsley Cups for the 2014 season, the Red Heavies will look to talismanic captain Tim Buchanan to lead them to a Hospital Cup win on Sunday, which would complete their silverware collection. University will also be bolstered by the presence of St.George Queensland Reds players Curtis Browning, Scott Gale and Dave McDuling, who will help direct the Students around the park as they aim to repeat their 2012 efforts, where they secured a 46-20 grand final win over the Dragons. Reds flanker and recent Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Liam Gill spurred Sunnybank to an impressive second-half comeback in last weekend’s preliminary-final, where the Dragons scored 28 unanswered-points to secure a 33-24 win, after trailing 24-5 at halftime. Fellow Reds players Greg Holmes and Jake Schatz will also bolster the Dragons’ pack, and will add an extra level of experience to the Sunnybank scrum and lineout, while also providing impact in open play. Across the grades there will be some great contests including the Premier Reserve Grade grand final between University and GPS, where Jeeps will be looking to reinstate themselves as the bench mark in Reserve grade after failing to defend their 2012 title against Souths in 2013. In Colts 1, it will be a battle of the students as University of Queensland faces off against Bond University, and the Women’s grand final will mirror the Premier Grade grand final, with University taking on Sunnybank. With the National Rugby Championship set to kick off this Thursday, 21 August when Brisbane City take on the Sydney Stars at Ballymore, this Sunday provides a great opportunity for fans to see both the Sunnybank and University players who have been selected for both Brisbane City and Queensland Country in action for their club sides. This grand final weekend is set to be one of the best in recent memory, so come down to Ballymore and support your favourite Premier Rugby club as they go head-to-head on the hallowed turf of the spiritual home of Rugby in Queensland, Ballymore. 4
